Strength Leaks

I am sure you have heard this many times too, “Wow! I didn’t think I lost that much strength!”,

when someone has been gone from training for a while then returns.

My question is, why are they surprised?

What happens to your car when you take your foot off the gas pedal while you’re driving?

While I am not opposed to someone taking a little time off periodically, chronically laying out of training

never helps. A person will always be weaker when they do that; and they will probably have gained some fat also.

Their strength has “leaked out”.

Going back to square one over and over again is very frustrating for all involved, in fact, I will not let a person train at the Cave who does that.

Be all in all the time if you want to make progress!

Be like the reindeer, not like Santa

A sleigh (sled) is pulled by strong animals.

At the Cave, do a lot of sled training:

  • pushes
  • pulls
  • forward backward, & laterally

It’s a big part of how we build strong animals (Cave girls & Cave men)!

During the holidays, many people will be like the big guy in the red suit sitting on his butt in the sleigh. Don’t be that guy!

Yes, of course, it is a good thing to give people you care about gifts.

Just remember, pull the sleigh, don’t just sit in it!

Why odd object training is so important

Keeping your edge during the holidays

It’s that time of year again, and training time seems to evaporate, The fact is, it really hasn’t, only the uncommitted will think it has.

Don’t get me wrong, I think people should enjoy the holidays, as for myself as a follower of Christ, Christmas has a very special significance for me and my family.

However, that doesn’t mean all training stops, far from it! I train year round.

Here’s some simple advice to keep you fit during this time of year.

  • stick to basic exercises, especially bodyweight
  • keep a couple of training tools handy, like an Adex club or a sandbag, that you can throw in your car and use most anywhere
  • keep your training short & intense aka “quick & dirty”
  • Make the most of the time you have, make it count!

This should be a no-brainer, but it isn’t for many time-frazzled folks.

Training and the rhythm of your life

What a screwy title for a blog post, right?

Those of you who have trained for years, or even decades, have already found it and embraced it.

When training is so ingrained in you it is a no-brainer whether or not you will be training on any given day. Of course you will, it is a huge part of your life.

You don’t have to decide whether or not you’ll give 100% effort on each rep.

Surely, you will! 13567145_1017411744961511_8036727736268552981_n

Does that mean that progress will come in leaps and bounds after many years of training? No, not at this point, but progress will still be made. It just takes a lot more to make it happen now than when you were new.

For new people, the results will come fast, but what happens when they no longer do?

What if it doesn’t seem like fun any more?

What if you plateau and can’t break through it?

What if the basics seem boring to you?IMG_20130106_135544

Will you quit? Or will you dig in and establish your rhythm, knowing that you are in for the long haul?

It’s a lot like a relationship, when the novelty wears off do you break and run? Or do you see the value in that person, and  persevere?

The iron is a lot like that.

You’ll train when it is not convenient.

You’ll train when whether conditions are miserable.

You’ll train when you just don’t feel like it.

You’ll train when you are tired, aching, or hungry.

You will, because you have found your rhythm.

It matters who you hang out with

Choose your friends carefully:

  • no negative people
  • no quitters
  • choose those who bring out your best
